THE REVOLVING MUSEUM AND BEYOND BENIGN: ART & SCIENCE PROGRAM

Beyond Benign’s Art and Science Program is designed to engage artists, scientists, youth, academics, and the public in a wide range of ways including:

  • an arts and science curriculum program
  • year-round public artworks, exhibitions and special events
  • the development of a Green Chemistry art and science mobile
  • artists and scientists collaborations

Led by Resident Artist and Project leader Jerry Beck, this new program combines art and science to focus on creative, social, and ecological strategies that expand Beyond Benign’s educational mission and goals.

Beyond Benign’s Art and Science Program will be a catalyst for personal, social, environmental, and political change. It will provide a dynamic platform for communicating the importance of art and science and creating ideas, responses, and solutions for many of society’s environmental challenges. The program will encourage students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, to make positive contributions to their health, school, neighborhoods, community, and the world around them.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ART TO THE ENVIRONMENT

The South Florida Environmental Project made a strong case for the arts when they wrote: “Art must be integrated into sustainability strategies. Like everywhere else on the globe, sustainability strategies have been driven by science and political expediency. One searches in vain at all levels of the worldwide sustainability research & policy development community to find the tiniest acknowledgment of the role art could and should play in making sustainability a reality. It seems self-evident that the kinds of environmental crises we face worldwide require that we tap a multiplicity of knowledges. To infuse societies with sustainability enhancing scientific innovations, culture must be both mobilized and transformed. Communities and the general public must be inspired and educated to pursue serious and committed environmental stewardship. Artists are the expert innovators and creative thinkers most engaged with the art knowledge and cultural integration skill that help to create the cultural glue holding societies together. Art and science, as twin knowledge forms, must be tapped in tandem to create the wisdom, and activate hope, that underpin sustainability.”

CURRENT ART AND SCIENCE PROJECTS

  • TALES FROM A TEST TUBE: EXHIBITION SERIES

    This series will include three two-month long exhibitions at the Warner Babcock Institute of Green Chemistry and Beyond Benign facilities.Current Exhibit Information

  • S.A.F.E. (SCIENCE & ART FOR EARTH PROJECTS)

    These experimental public art & science projects will revitalize selected locations though multi-media and interdisciplinary art highlighting Green Chemistry and the balance between human activity and the natural world.

  • ECOART (ENVIRONMENTAL CURRICULUM OF ART, RESEARCH, AND TRAINING)

    Utilizing authentic , holistic and project-based learning models, this curriculum program will encourage youth to understand the synergistic and healthy relationship between science, art, and our natural world.

  • GREEN DREAM MOBILE

    This amazing green art-mobile will inspire, educate, and respond to environmentally issues and concerns. It will be constructed by sustainable design principles and will be able to both transport and be part of the curriculum through demonstrations and other interactive components. The curriculum will be designed to engage both students and teachers around the topic of identifying environmental hazards, understanding the link of the hazards to related diseases, and identifying the sustainable science solution that avoids use of the hazards. Through an interactive approach, our unique curriculums can be distributed to communities both in the greater New England area and nationally.

ART & SCIENCE: THE MISSION

  • Bring artistic, scientific, cultural, educational, environmental, philanthropic, and government leaders together to contribute to this new and exciting program.
  • Create educational art and science projects that are ecologically sensitive and incorporate green chemistry, green products and design, and sustainable strategies.
  • Become a catalyst between nature and culture through environmental awareness, social justice, academic and service learning, personal growth, health, and wellness.
  • Identify opportunities for the development of art and science projects, and matching these opportunities with appropriate multi-disciplinary practitioners.
  • Create innovative and inspiring marketing and fundraising strategies that involve artists, scientists, youth, and the public.
  • Become a leader in the field of green art and follow best practices that benefit human health and the health of the natural world.
  • To develop and implement green guidelines for art and science projects that encourage problem solving and changes in approaches, attitudes, and innovation.
